“Spring has returned. The Earth is like a child that knows poems.” ~Rainer Maria Rilke
Spring inspires a mood of renewal and vigor – a perfect time to reexamine New Year’s resolutions or commit to new health goals. The weather is beautiful (so I live in Southern California – but still…) and some of the best produce of the year is emerging (above is a photo of my CSA box last week).
Enjoy a roundup of the best of the web the past few months to educate and inspire you towards your goals.
Health and Nutrition
“Eat healthy” is ambiguous advice. There are as many approaches as there are experts. A good place to start is exploring traditional foods. So what do we really mean when we say “traditional foods”? Read Nourished Kitchen’s Traditional Foods in a Nutshell for more.
What not to eat is just as contentious. Don’t miss Gary Taube’s New York Times article on the harmful effects of sugar; Is Sugar Toxic? Here is the link to Dr. Robert Lustig’s presentation Sugar: the Bitter Truth cited in Taube’s article.
There’s more to being healthy then the foods we eat (or don’t), like sleep quality and stress management. Chris Kresser of The Healthy Skeptic wrote an excellent series defining 9 Steps to Perfect Health.
If you’re coping with serious health issues it’s critical to examine your wheat and/or gluten intake. Read Lydia’s (Divine Health blog) experience for motivation; Reflections on a Year of Being Gluten Free.

For all kinds of traditional-foods based healthy recipes, including gluten-free, grain-free, and dairy-free options, the following blogs do weekly blog carnivals that gathers them in one place;

Physical activity should part of our daily lives. If you’re not doing some form of exercise make it a priority this Spring. Find something you enjoy and do it. But beware of the conventional wisdom of committing hours to jogging or other cardio. Read more from The Healthy Skeptic – 9 Steps to Perfect Health.
It’s probably the yogi in me (yoga is one of my main forms of exercise) but I resonate with Mark Sisson’s (from Mark’s Daily Apple and author of the The Primal Blueprint) take on using your own body weight to build strength. You can watch him demonstrate beginner to advance levels of what he calls five essential movements on his site: pushup, overhead press, plank, squat, and pullup. Add in weekly sprints or high intensity interval training to round out your routine. Also read his Case Against Cardio.
Food Freedom Rally – May 16th at the US Capitol Building
We got Bin Laden – now it’s time to get those Amish? In the midst of our country’s budget crisis, taxpayer money has been funding a year and a half long FDA investigation against an Amish dairyman supplying fresh milk to a DC area buying group. Grassfed on the Hill is organizing a peaceful rally for May 16th, 2011, 10:00am at the U.S. Capitol building. Sally Fallon Morell of the Weston A. Price Foundation and Mark McAfee of Organic Pastures will be among the speakers.
