Here’s an “avoid-the-canned-version” super simple homemade cranberry sauce recipe: just three ingredients and naturally sweetened.
Cranberry sauce is so easy to make at home, there really is no need for the canned version. You just throw in a bag of cranberries into a small saucepan, add some liquid, a little sweetener, and cook for a few minutes until all the berries pop.
The main advantages of making your own over a canned version is that you will get more flavor and better nutrition from a homemade version. And key is the fact that you get to control how much and what kind of sweetener goes into your sauce. Many canned versions have corn syrup and many recipes online call for high amounts of white sugar – both are completely unnecessary. Get the white sugar out of your sauce with natural sweeteners like honey, and leave it a little tart – remember it’s not dessert!
Simple Homemade Cranberry Sauce
This sauce is not overly sweet so adjust the honey to your taste.
Yield: 1 1/2 cups sauce
1 (12 ounce) bag fresh cranberries
3/4 cup pomegranate juice or water
1/4 cup honey or other natural sweetener
Zest of one organic orange (optional)
Place all ingredients in a medium saucepan. Stir the berries as you cook on medium low heat for about 10 minutes, until all the berries pop and the sauce thickens.
