12 essential homeopathic remedies

Dr. Pamela Abramson-Levine, Family Practice Non-Force Chiropractor, returns with another guest post (check out her post for natural summertime remedies here).

What’s in your medicine cabinet?  Pain relievers, fever reducers, antacids, laxatives, antihistamines, cough suppressants, decongestants, anti-diarrheals? All of these drugs have side effects.

How can you relieve these problems without nasty side effects?  The answer is homeopathic remedies!  For those times when you would reach for a drug from your medicine chest, but would rather avoid the side effects, these remedies will often bring you and your family much wanted relief.

12 Essential Homeopathic Remedies

Arnica Montana 30c and 200ck: For bumps and bruises, falls, and trauma, this remedy is a must have for everyone!  I also recommend an arnica cream to use topically on bumps and bruises, and even for sunburn relief.  Traumeel cream is excellent for this purpose.

Apis Melifica 30c: Great for bug bites and for minor itchy rashes as well.  For topical use, calendula lotion and calamine lotion are also helpful for itchy bites and rashes.

Podophyllum Peltatum 30c: for occasional diarrhea from food poisoning or a GI tract virus, this remedy really helps.  Be sure to replace fluids and electrolytes as well.

Hydrastis Canadensis 30c: For post nasal drip from viral infections or allergies.  This remedy can prevent chest congestion which is often a result of post nasal drip.  Begin use at first sign of post nasal drip.

Oscillococcinum:  Research on this remedy is plentiful.  It has been shown to diminish the intensity and shorten the duration of the flu—body aches, fever, and malaise.  It is also good to use for preventing flu.  Adults take 1/3 to ½ a vial daily during flu season to prevent getting the flu.  For children under 12, ¼-1/3 of a vial.  For children 2 and under, 10 pellets to ¼ of a vial.

Phosphorus 30c:  To relieve headaches; especially if they are exacerbated by heat.

Aconitum 30c: For fevers associated with colds and other illnesses.  Fever is simply a tool that the immune system uses to help combat viral and bacterial invaders.  Therefore, it is most often best to just let fevers run their course. But if the fever is causing a great deal of discomfort and is not allowing the patient to sleep, this remedy is very helpful.  Applying a cool compress on the forehead and/or back of the neck is also a great way to bring comfort to a patient who is hot from fever.

Sulfur 30c:  This remedy is an excellent choice for rashes that are aggravated by heat.  It is also good for mild to moderate tummy aches.  Sulfur 30c is also a common homeopathic remedy for feelings of anger.

Pulsatilla 30c: Great remedy for relieving the symptoms of the common cold.  (Especially useful if the cold is accompanied by feelings of needing attachment to mother or another caregiver.)

Hepar sulfuris 30c: Relief for coughs. (fresh ginger and fresh squeezed lemon juice with a bit of honey steeped in hot water is also an excellent cough reliever).

Histaminium 30c:  Relief from runny nose, itchy eyes, due to allergies.

Lycopodium Clavatum 30c: Relief from gas and bloated abdomen.  A good digestive enzyme may also prevent these symptoms, but once you have them, this is the homeopathic medicine that will bring you relief.  (Also a good choice for gas: Carbo Vegetalis 30c)

What other aliments do you and your family members contract occasionally?  Chances are there is also a homeopathic remedy for that!
